I generally got 100s on those exams when I would take my time, re-plot, re-measure and re-calculate, but even when I goofed up somehow, I got an 80 or higher. I was 100% confident about my answers on the other 44, so I knew I had already passed. I figured the way the USCG did it was have a nerd look at each question, figure out the most common mistakes and what answer those mistake would yield. Just three! Youre probably thinking: That might have been a good place to start, seeing how it is the chart-plotting portion of the exam. And I would say: Youre funny. Im sure glad I freaked out at the last minute and crash studied so many practice multiple choice exams. This includes people who have been on or around boats their whole life! No need to support. To be honest, Ive heard the classes are incredibly boring, that they just read to you straight from a script, but that they do drill home what you need to know and its all packed and fresh right then when you take the test so most people who do the class pass (is what Ive heard anyway). Is documenting boating experience complicated? Ty thats what Im doing but I noticed no of the questions ever change on boat safe. Thankfully you have a pretty good margin on that section so just keep scavenging and when it comes time to take the test, answer the ones you know quickly, then tally up the unknowns and if youre still in the good (Ill be honest, Im trying to recall but I think you can get a 70% on that section to pass something like that, I had the exact number in my blog post when it was fresh in my mind), but if youve already answered enough right to pass then youll feel fine guessing on the unknowns. Right?! Whats the joke? Also did you find that most of the questions on the deck general test came from the lecture notes and study guide from each chapter? I really would. Yeah, a few of the guys that took the test with me said they had asked around to some fellow Captains about the exam and many currently licensed (albeit years back) Captains told them they could not walk in and pass the test today without re-studying and memorizing the material again.
